3. Inconceivable Messiness

There may be no greater gulf of understanding in the world than that between parents and non-parents. When parents try to explain to non-parents how babies tend to take up all of one's time, the claim often sounds exaggerated, even meaningless. Sooner or later the non-parents become parents and are instantly astonished to discover just how vulnerable and dependent a baby is.

This reliance affects every single moment of a parent's life, every minute of every day. Many new parents feel their normal routine is hijacked mostly in two areas: the bedroom and the kitchen. Regarding the first, the combination of exhaustion and immersion makes intimacy an afterthought at best. Regarding the second, the previously well-organized and pristine counters become an unholy mix of boiling bottles and soothers, dustings of spilled formula powder and dollops of mashed peas and carrots that seem to self-regenerate immediately after being wiped up. Holiday meals typically require multiple items to be laid out at once – and the chef to be on top of lots of details. A one-person wrecking crew in the form of a baby doesn't quite make the process more efficient.

Solution: Strategic Avoidance
Work around Baby to every extent possible. Tired as you are, try doing an hour's worth of preparation in the evening once the baby's asleep and you've got a slightly longer window than normal. The next day, do another 45 minutes between breastfeeding sessions. This isn't easy since it involves an ongoing process of removing things, preparing them and putting them away again, but it still might prove easier than trying to get anything done while Baby's around.
