Also remember to keep a stash of diaper ointment, baby wipes (travel-sized wipes work perfectly), burp cloths, a sweater or jacket in case of sudden weather changes or cold buildings and extra socks.

Medicinal Must-haves

If your outing takes you outdoors for long periods of time, remember the elements can be dangerous to your baby without the proper protection. For infants under 6 months, use a hat and long-sleeved clothing to guard against the sun's rays, says Dr. Jim Sears, a board certified pediatrician and author of several parenting books, including The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood (Little, Brown and Company, 2006) and The Baby Book (Little, Brown and Company, 2003). Dr. Sears adds that sun-protective clothing with 30, 45 and 50 SPF is a good option for babies, too, and doesn't require re-application of sunscreen.

"For any child over 6 months, use a broad spectrum product that contains zinc oxide and titanium oxide," Dr. Sears says. "Those two ingredients will provide immediate sun blockage. Other products without those ingredients need to be on the skin 30 minutes or so before the start of providing protection."

If your baby is teething, it's also a good idea to carry a pain reliever such as ibuprofen, which acts as a pain reliever and helps cut down inflammation of the gums, Dr. Sears says. He also recommends keeping a few teething toys in your bag to help ease your child's discomfort.
