The Well-stocked Diaper Bag
What to Have with You in Case of Emergency
By Renee Roberson
As for feeding time, Gordon suggests packing bottles of formula or breast milk in freezer/fridge packs to prevent spoilage. Or, if you're using a powdered formula, be sure to carry bottled water to mix it with. It's also not a bad idea to carry an extra clean and empty bottle in case you are somewhere that doesn't allow for washing bottles. For nursing moms, be sure to pack a snack for yourself, as nursing requires you to consume an extra 500 calories a day, and a shawl or small blanket with a safety pin to attach to your shirt in case you're out somewhere and need to nurse discreetly.
Packing at least two spare outfits for Baby is important to remember, but Baby may not be the only one who needs changing after a messy bowel movement or feeding.
"I think moms forget about themselves, but there were definitely spit-up moments where I wished I had packed an extra shirt for myself in the diaper bag," says Danielle Swift, a mom of twin girls from Bethany, Conn.
As for diapering essentials, pack about four to six diapers even if you'll only be out for about an hour, as infants can often have unpredictable bowel movements. Large plastic zipper bags are another must-have, and folded up, they don't take up a lot of room in a diaper bag. They're good for sealing up dirty diaper for disposal and to hold wet or soiled outfits, says Tara Mediate, president and co-founder of KooKoo Bear Kids, an online retail marketer of designer kids' rooms, accessories and gifts.
