The Well-stocked Diaper Bag

What to Have with You in Case of Emergency

You may be traveling with your infant during the summer months, going for drives to view the fall leaves or getting out to enjoy the moderate spring weather at local parks. But no matter the season, unlike life before baby, there are several things to consider when packing a bag before any outing or day trip.

Here are some tips from the experts on the essentials to pack in the diaper bag in case of emergency and tried-and-true tactics from experienced moms.

The Anatomy of the Perfect Diaper Bag

First of all, there are important things to look for when selecting a diaper bag, says Jimeale Jorgensen, who designs diaper bags sold through the Web site www.jimeale.com. "Good diaper bags should have a change mat, a key ring clip located at the top of the inside of the bag, a bottle holder, a zippered area, pockets, a good shoulder strap and a strap that fits over a carriage or stroller," she says.

Sandra Gordon, mom of two and author of Consumer Reports Best Baby Products (Consumer Reports Books, 2007), says that a deal breaker on some diaper bags is the outside bottle pocket. "It can be too small for some types of bottles, so you'll want to check that out when you're diaper bag shopping by bringing along the bottle you plan to use," she says.

Outing Essentials

"Pack your diaper bag so you're ready for everything and anything," Gordon says. "Consider it your changing table away from home as well as a baby entertainment center and portable food court. Assign each compartment to a specific item so you don't have to go digging for things."
