Breastfeeding Multiples

Yes, It's Possible!

Pages:  1  2

For multiples who are born prematurely, breastfeeding provides an added bonus. Breast milk is easier for the premature infant to digest! As Kim Sermonic, mother of now 5-year-old fraternal boys, explains, breastfeeding multiples is possible, but requires more effort on the part of the mother.

"My twins were born six weeks early and I still breastfed them for a year," Sermonic says. "The boys were taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit after delivery so I was not able to begin breastfeeding them. I was taken to my room where a nurse and a breast pump greeted me. To establish a milk supply, I pumped every two hours until the boys were ready to breastfeed."

Getting Support

Help is available for mothers of multiples who want to breastfeed their infants. Lactation consultants are available at many hospitals and doctors' offices. Some La Leche League groups cater to mothers of multiples. Plus, a local mother of multiples club can also provide help with breastfeeding. At a club, questions about breastfeeding can be answered by other mothers who have successfully breastfed their multiples. A few clubs even provide information and support just for mothers who are breastfeeding.

Join the Club

The National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs assists parents in connecting with local clubs. They also publish several publications that offer information on breastfeeding. NOMOTC is a nonprofit organization founded in 1960 for the purpose of promoting the special aspects of child development, which relate specifically to multiple birth children. Headquartered in Thompson Station, Tenn., NOMOTC currently has more than 4,300 member clubs with 23,000 members throughout the United States.
