Magical Moments
Precious Memories from Our Children Come in Big and Small Sizes
By I.J. Schecter
"If your baby does something once, he'll do it again," Dr. Klaiman says. So while you don't want your partner to miss any nose crinkle or awkward clap or funny vocalization, you also need to respect their need for space. If they don't come running from the other room when you say, "You're missing something so cute!" don't resent them for it. They'll see it another time.
Both you and your spouse will have countless special private moments with your child, just as you'll have countless moments with him or her together, as a family. Whether milestones, stepping stones, or all the wondrous moments in between, your child's magic will last your entire lifetime, so try not to worry about who gets to see what or when. Focus instead on those moments that provide you a window into the soul of this marvelous creature, this competent being who has enriched your lives beyond measure.
Gordon, a father in Ottawa, Canada, captures it best when describing a moment in surreptitious observation of his son, Ethan. "There was this one morning when he was 3 or 4, and he was sitting outside, in a little chair behind our house, with a table beside it," he says. "He didn't know Jeanne and I were watching him. It was very early, and the sun was just coming up. He was gently sucking his thumb on one hand, and with the other arm he was cuddling his blanket. And that was the thing: there he was, just sitting by himself, silently taking in the morning. Nothing has ever meant as much to me as that moment."
