Keep an Eye on the Eyes

Dr. Weise also recommends good eyelid hygiene. She advises the use of a warm wash cloth with diluted tear-free soap to help keep the eyes clean.

But despite your best intentions, eye infections remain one of the most common ailments that your little one will encounter. Your child discovers his or her world by touch and feel, and those little fingers often find their way back up to the face. So anytime you notice that something is amiss, remember that a thorough examination by an eye doctor is critical to determining the cause of the eye problem and to getting the most appropriate treatment, Dr. Weise says.

Watch for "Raccoon Eyes"

While there are plenty of signs in the eye that can indicate a common infection, be sure to also carefully watch around the eye. What can first appear as an innocuous black eye can have much more serious implications. A form of pediatric cancer called neuroblastoma is often only noted after children develop what is sometimes called "raccoon eyes" or black eyes that weren't caused by any physical trauma.
