That First Wonderful Year
Relax and Enjoy Baby's First Year of Life
By Shannon McKelden
The first year of Baby's life is filled with lots to worry about – diapers, feedings, too little sleep. But it is also filled with the joys of a new life. There will be surprises and wonders you never imagined – if you remember to watch for them.
"There are millions of little things we parents stress about!" says Elizabeth Pantley, mother of four and author of eight books for parents, including The No-Cry Sleep Solution (McGraw-Hill, 2002). "Messy rooms, dirty faces, lost toys, peas not eaten. Not a single one of these things means a gosh darn thing in the long run. Those insignificant, trivial details certainly make up a large part of life, but when they cause a disproportionate amount of angst they conceal the many little joys that children bring into our lives. It can make your life more joyful if you learn to view the little things for what they are – little things – and don't let them get in the way of taking pleasure out of every single day of family life."
As each child grows and begins to notice the world around him, we as parents can view things all over again with fresh eyes. The simplest things become pleasures, because they bring delight to our baby.
"I understood why I stayed at home to be with my kids the day my son first laughed uproariously at my daughter as she let a blue washcloth fall from her face into the tub with a splash, and we laughed as hard as he did," says Carmen Berg of Calgary, Alberta. "It was then that it hit my heart ... this is why I stay home."
When it comes to our babies we need to remember not to miss the small stuff. What are the special things parents should watch for (and maybe even chronicle in a baby book so they don't forget)?
