Gift-giving Ideas for the New Mom
By Kristine Prugh
Christina, mom of 8-month-old son, Trevor, received diamond earrings from her husband on their anniversary, about two weeks before her due date. Christina wasn't expecting them and was thrilled to receive them. "Christina was glad I didn't give them to her on the day of his birth. She would have been too tired to appreciate them," says her husband.
Don't be overwhelmed and think that if you cannot afford those 2-carat flawless diamond earrings, nothing else will do. You don't have to break the bank to make your wife happy. The gift should be meaningful and something you know she will love.
Diana, new mom in New York City, received a gold locket with pictures of her new baby inside. The baby's name and birth date were engraved on the back. Another great gift idea is a charm bracelet with a single disc charm engraved with your child's initials on one side and birth date on the back.
Pearls are yet another wonderful choice for new moms. Janelle, new mom from Ohio, received a strand of pearls from her husband after the birth of their son, Gabriel. You have a lot of options regarding pearls. You could opt for a classic single strand with matching earrings. Or if only the earrings are in your budget, you wife will surely love them and appreciate your thoughtfulness. And for parents of multiples, consider giving your wife a strand of pearls for each baby. If she carries and delivers triplets, a triple strand of pearls is the least you can do!
Timing is also key. If your hospital room seems to have a revolving door with everyone from adoring grandparents and friends to doctors and nurses, it might be better to wait until you are at home to give your wife a gift. Lauren, a new mom from Chicago explains, "I had never heard of new mom gift-giving before, so I didn't have any expectations at all. Dan bought me a lovely necklace, which he gave to me after we got home from the hospital. He brought it with us to the hospital, but decided that things were too crazy there and wanted to wait until things settled down a little. It was a really nice surprise."
Again, you must use your own judgment here. You will know the right moment to surprise and delight your wife with a gift. It might be before the baby arrives or maybe while you are in the hospital, or it might be better to wait until you return home.
