Stay-at-home Mom's Day Out
Get out of the House for a Change of Scenery with Baby
By Laura Cone
She took her infant twins to the park and museums to get out of the hotel room. "They were always out," Wegner says. "It was always something new to look at. They were never in the same place." She says while infants might not recognize or appreciate the abstract painting at the art museum, they will watch people.
Join a playgroup or just spend time at the mall, Wegner says. "Get them out to walk them around so they see something other than the four walls of your living room," she says.
Moms of babies should pick destinations that allow for sitting and walking around. However, some outings are not suitable for mothers with newborns. For example, if you want to go hiking in a natural forest, check first to find out how many bathrooms are available and where the bathrooms are located. Be careful not to select a trail that is too strenuous or long. Carry a cellular phone with you.
It's also wise call ahead and find out if you should expect long lines to get into a theme park or other destination. Better to reschedule at a time when there are fewer people so you are not stuck in lines with a baby.
Finally, while your baby will probably never remember the trips you took to the museum or the afternoons at a coffee shop, your baby will sense whether Mom was happy or not. Sometimes outings with Baby lift your spirits so you can begin to feel connected to the human race again. Watching people buzz by on their way to work or a date while you're out can rekindle the feeing you are your own person.
