That's My Job
A Journey to Become a Stay-at-Home Dad
By Michael Sheridan

When the last job possibility for me turned into yet another disappointment, my wife revealed to me that she didn't want me to get a job outside of the house. She felt our son was the happy, calm child he is because I was home with him. And then it hit me. There I was, watching Jimmy Neutron with my son, and it occurred to me how wrong I had been. I already had a job. I was a stay-at-home dad, and my boss was the small boy sitting next to me. Sure, the pay stunk, but the benefits were out of this world, and the naptimes were great.
I can honestly say that the view of my life took a brighter turn after that. Realizing that I had a job to do, I have since set out to do it to the best of my ability. I make sure my son is taken care of, fed, changed and clothed properly. The dishes are cleaned and the house is neat. Dinner is cooked or started prior to my wife's return home. I'm not Mr. Mom. I'm simply Dad – and that is my job.
