Constipation in Babies
What Causes Constipation in Infants?
By Teri Brown
If all else fails, a small portion of a glycerine suppository, which can be obtained over the counter at local pharmacies, can be instilled in the rectal vault to evacuate the stool. It is also important to talk to your pediatrician if your baby becomes constipated, and never give a laxative to your baby before consulting a health care provider.
Homeopathic remedies are also becoming quite popular. Dr. Lauri Grossman, a practitioner for Homeopathic Consultations and Integrative Healthcare in New York City and the Chair of the Department of Medicine and Humanistic Studies at American Medical College of Homeopathy, says that physicians trained in holistic medicine often rely on homeopathic medicines for constipation in babies because they are safe, effective and have no harmful side effects.
"Integrative medical experts have found homeopathy to be one of the most reliable ways to prevent constipation in children who come from families where there is a history of constipation," Dr. Grossman says. "Calcarea carbonica is recommended for children who experience painless constipation. Lycopodium is more helpful when the child is gassy as well. The homeopathic medicine, Nux vomica, will relieve constipation when there is cramping and when the child cries out in anger."
Most of these remedies can be found in a health food store, but again, discussing the treatment over with your health care provider is always recommended.
Lauri Harrison from Denver, Colo., had a very constipated baby and was at a loss of what to do. She found that a homeopathic remedy did the trick.
"He had major, really major, bowel movements for three days that were out of this world," Harrison says. "Let's just say he went through two diapers when I changed him because so much was coming out. And it was multicolored; I could tell his food was not properly digested. There was white powder chunks from the formula in his bowel movement."
Harrison feels that pediatricians who are integrative and allow homeopathic and herbal remedies to be used are quite open to something like this. "And you know, what works for the baby, and is safe for the baby, makes for a happy parent," Harrison says.
