Should Parents Worry About Their Child's Car Seats?

"We are concerned because a lot of parents have been needlessly alarmed by the approach many media took to report the story," Rimmer says. "The facts simply don't support the headlines. Healthycar.org put a disclaimer on its own Web site stating that there was absolutely no scientific evidence to suggest that any of the chemical components in the child seats it tested are dangerous to children in the concentrations in which they are found in child seats, yet no one reported on the disclaimer. That's the most important thing [parents] need to know about the Healthycar.org report."

Parents should also understand that Healthycar.org itself is advising parents to continue using their car seats no matter what rating they received. The Web site also states that the chemicals they tested in car seats don't pose an immediate health concern.

What Parents Should Know
  • The car seat guide on Healthycar.org is just one guide that could be used by parents when choosing a car seat for their child. Safety during auto accidents is far more important than the almost unsubstantiated risk from possible chemicals.
  • The Consumer Product Safety Commission has determined that children are not at risk from vinyl plastics as used in children's products.
