Robotic Surgery

Is This New Technology
Safe for Infants?

Dr. McAleer says that considering that the robot was only authorized for use by the FDA in July 2000, the access is improving and parents should contact their child's urologist to see what the availability is in their area or if they would have to go to another medical center for the robotics surgical option.

"I would like parents to know that robotic surgery is available for children but that many of the open surgical techniques may still be more prudent in the younger child where small open surgical incisions are possible and open surgical times are much shorter than the current robotic surgical times," Dr. McAleer says. "I think that robotic surgery is very exciting and may be the way that surgical procedures will be done in the future, but how long that will be and with what type of robot device, I'm not sure."

Common Robotic Surgeries Performed on Infants
  • Robotic pyeloplasy – Repair of congenital obstruction of the kidney. This is needed when the patient is born with an obstruction between the kidney and the ureter.
  • Orchiopexy – Repair of intra-abdominal testes. This is needed when the testicles fail to drop down into the scrotum.
  • Nephrectomy – Removal of diseased kidneys. The surgery removes diseased or otherwise defective kidneys.
