Something to Sling About

Baby Carriers Are a Great Tool for New Moms

By Teri Brown

Pages:  1  2  3  4

Baby carriers and slings allow for close physical proximity and eye contact when they are infants and, as they grow and become more confident, many can be converted so the baby can then face out to see the world.

Before You Buy
With the wide array of baby carrier choices available, parents can be overwhelmed when choosing the right carrier for their baby. You should make sure it is comfortable, easy to put on and take off and made of safe, quality fabric. You should know the minimum child weight and the maximum child weight for the baby carrier.

Jude Kuipers is the owner of Mammamilk.com, a baby carrier manufacturer. She also maintains a Web site that compares hundreds of baby carriers side-by-side. She says there are pros and cons for each type of carrier. A parent should answer the following questions before buying a baby carrier:

  • Is your baby a newborn or toddler? A newborn should be cradled in a natural fetal position – sling-type carriers are best for this. Toddlers are heavy to carry – a two-shouldered carrier such as a forward-facing carrier or wrap-style carrier is better for toddlers.
  • Is nursing important? Most slings and wraps are excellent for discreet breastfeeding. (The typical front pack does not allow for nursing, as baby is facing forward.)
