The Ready Position
Preparing a Functional Space for Baby
By I.J. Schecter
(McGraw-Hill, 2001) and owner of the Orinda, Calif.-based consulting firm The Untangled Web. Make this task easier by creating an overall checklist for yourself, prioritizing items that are likely to take the longest or require the most effort, such as assembling the crib. As in any endeavor, laying it all out on paper will make the total job seem more manageable.
Give yourself specific deadlines for completing each task and stick to them so there's no danger of a negative snowball effect, which will cause undue stress for you and your partner. For example, if you're planning on painting the baby's room, aim to finish the job a month before the due date so you aren't accidentally caught with a wet brush in hand just as your partner gets swamped by the first serious contractions.
In addition, build sufficient time into the overall schedule to allow for potential delays in delivery, installation or assembly (not that you aren't a great handyman, it's just that certain baby items can be trickier to build). For example, recent evidence shows that the majority of baby car seats are installed improperly, so it's best to assume you'll need some help and exra time.
