How Did I Know That?
Investigating Mother's Intuition
By Dr. Laurie Nadel
The old brain, located at the base of the neck, is also known as the reptilian brain. It governs instinctive behaviors such as moving toward and away from light or darkness, establishing a nest or place of safety and defending it. When someone sits at your desk during your lunch break and you return to find that she moved a few papers and a couple of paper clips, the irritation you feel is generated from the reptilian brain where you feel invaded.
The limbic system, located above the reptilian brain, is also known as the brain of connection. "The limbic system evolved so that female mammals can stay connected to their offspring," Dr. MacLean says. Sitting atop the limbic system is the neocortex, divided into left and right brains. The left is the brain you took to school. It is the center of logic and language. The right brain, which thinks in images, is also believed to be the center of intuition. Flashes of knowing can come from intuition with logic – as in scientific breakthroughs and creative ideas. Intuition and feeling, or emotional intelligence, can grab you by the heart or give you an unmistakable gut feeling that your child needs help – even when you are physically separated and there has been no prior communication.
