Does Baby Really Need That?
Determining the Must-haves for Newborns
By Sue Poremba
Trovillion is also a fan of hand-me-down clothes. "When my son was first born, I wanted all of his clothes to be new, and I secretly didn't want him to be seen in the same outfit twice," she says. "After changing his outfits multiple times a day, I tossed that idea out the door and started looking through the sacks of hand-me-downs that friends and family had given me."
Spending Money Wisely
Valerie Swack is co-owner of www.BabyBrowns.com and the mother of two young children. Even though she sells nursery needs, she knows that "parents spend too much money on some notable big ticket items that aren't what I'd call money well spent." How do you know what to buy?
"When we got pregnant, I talked with all my friends ... for advice, what works, what does not," says Stephenie Hope of Valley Village, Calif.
Items that Hope, Swack and other parents did without include:
- Car bottle warmers. "We registered for a travel bag that plugged into the cigarette lighter in the car to keep bottles warm, but who are we kidding?" Hope says, noting that she didn't use it.
- Fancy clothes. The clothes are beautiful, but not as practical.
- Fancy diaper pails. Swack notes that you can prevent odor by throwing dirty diapers into a plastic grocery bag and tying it up each time you change diapers. Throw the bag away daily, and you won't have any odors. Of course, the fancy pails offer the convenience of not having to be changed every day.
- Fancy burp cloths. Regular hand towels, old clean cloth diapers or even your own worn-out T-shirts work just as well.
