Tracking Baby's Milestones

By Renee Roberson

"To be honest, I've never really 'encouraged'," Johnston says. "I've let each of them do things at their own pace. I hate comparing them to charts on what they should be doing at certain stages. Sometimes they're way ahead and other times – walking and crawling, for instance – they're not."

Both Drs. Steltenkamp and Shubin agree that you can't be too rigid when tracking your baby's development. "All of these guidelines are at the approximate midpoint of when a child would or could meet these milestones," Dr. Steltenkamp says. "There are many who will perform these 'feats' prior to this age and an equal number will take longer."

"The best way to help your baby reach these milestones is to continually interact with your baby," Dr. Steltenkamp says. "Your speech, cuddling, bouncing, etc., all play a role in encouraging their development."

Marking the Milestones
Though now it may seem like you could never forget the exact date your baby started crawling or walking, it's a good idea to track the memorable milestones on paper just in case. Johnston made a scrapbook chronicling her first son's milestones, but hasn't had time to complete similar projects for her second and third sons.

"But I do write things down in journals for each of them, particularly milestones or cute and horrible things that they do," Johnston sas. "I just have three notebooks sitting next to the bed and always try to write something short in them each week. It's fun to go back and see what one of them was doing when he was the age that one of the others is at now."
