The Facts on Nursemaid's Elbow

By Teri Brown

Pages:  1  2  3  4

Nursemaid's elbow isn't as traumatic as it first seems when it happens to your child. Remember, it is quite common and has no lasting effects. Except that it might make you think twice every time you go to move your child around by the arms!

The Facts on Nursemaid's Elbow
  • Nursemaid's elbow is a partial slippage of one of the bones forming the elbow joint. Part of the ligament tissue is caught between two bones and is extremely painful.
  • Nursemaid's elbow is very common in children 1 to 4 years of age and has no lasting effects.
  • It is usually caused by pulling on a child's arm like when helping them over a curb or playing with them.
  • It is easily corrected in an emergency room, though some doctors believe the problem is best taken care of by a pediatric orthopedist.
