The Facts on Nursemaid's Elbow

Dr. Simon suggests that if parents suspect their child has sustained this injury they see a physician who is experienced in treating this condition.

"Many, but not all pediatricians, emergency room physicians and orthopedists can treat this condition, but the ideal physician best trained to treat this is a pediatric orthopedist," Dr. Simon says. "It is important to not wait too long before seeking out help, as it will be that much harder to correct the problem if treatment is delayed."

What's the Treatment?
According to Dr. Simon, the ligament needs to slip back into its normal position. This can't be done by pushing on the ligament; it has to be done indirectly by manipulating the forearm. From its extended position, the forearm is flexed up to about 90 degrees at the elbow and then the forearm is rotated from the palm-down position to a palm-up position.

"As the ligament goes back into place a click or snap is heard or felt," Dr. Simon says. "Within several minutes if the ligament has gone back into place correctly, the child starts moving the arm normally. If the child is afraid or treatment has been delayed sometimes a splint is applied and worn for a few days."

It is not uncommon for nursemaid's elbow to reoccur. Though most doctors concur that there is no physical evidence one occurrence of nursemaid's elbow makes it more likely that another incident is probable, certain children do seem more prone to the injury than others. Eventually, the child grows out of it as his bones and ligaments mature.
