The Facts on Nursemaid's Elbow

By Teri Brown

It is when that ligament slips up, with some of it slipping into the joint, that the elbow becomes difficult to move and causes extreme pain.

What Causes Nursemaid's Elbow?
"Another name for nursemaid's elbow is a 'pulled elbow' because in reality it happens when someone is holding onto the child's hand and either the child tries to pull his/her arm away intentionally or if the child accidentally falls," Dr. Simon says. "It also happens if the person holding the arm pulls the child's arm to pick him/her up or have them to change directio."

One of the reasons it is called nursemaid's elbow is because of how common it is in very young children. Just helping a child up a curb by the arms can cause the radial to move wrong and the ligament to slip upwards.
