Homemade Holiday Presents
Help Your Little Ones Make Their Own Gifts
By Linda Sharp
One of the most inexpensive, yet creative gifts is the versatile puzzle frame! Simply buy the cheapest puzzle with medium-sized pieces you can find on the shelf (generally $1.99 for 250 pieces). Mom or Dad will then need to spray-paint the pieces any colors desired. Once the paint dries, the children then glue the pieces around the edges of a clear plastic frame (sizes vary – $.59 to $2.99). Add a special picture, and you have gift any grandparent or teacher would be proud to display!
"Walk All Over" Sweatshirt
This is one of my children's favorite gifts to make for their teachers each year! Purchase a plain sweatshirt ($6.99) and several colors of fabric paint ($1.29 per tube). Mom or Dad then writes with fabric paint, "I never let my students walk all over me!" on the back. (Place newspaper inside before painting to avoid any seeping though.) Once this dries, take a sponge and cover the bottom of your child's foot with a thin layer of paint. (We usually do this on the edge of the tub.) With the sweatshirt on the floor, press their foot down, leaving a colorful footprint. Repeat with various colors until feet cover both the front and back! (Don't worry, the paint washes right off in the tub.) The wording can be changed for grandparents, aunts, friends, etc!
Baked With Love
I have yet to meet a child who does not equate the holiday season with decorating cookies! Let them help create several batches of various types (ingredient prices vary), decorate them and then pack them into wonderful tins, boxes or buckets ($.50 to $3.99). Great gifts for family and friends!
