Safety Away from Home

Tips for Childproofing Other Locations

Andrews recommends parents and family/friends work together prior to their visit to help ease the situation and avoid potential hurt feelings by developing a household safety checklist. "Collaborating with Grandma and Grandpa to review potential dangerous items and substances in their home and discuss where those items will be stored away during the visit is an excellent idea to take precautions ahead of time so that you all can make the most of the special time that you have together," he says.

If you find that your family disagrees with you on the issue of childproofing their home during your visit, don't let this get in the way of disrupting the relationship between your child and their loved ones. Bring with you whatever items you feel are necessary to maintain your child's safety. Assemble your own portable safety package that can include plastic outlet covers, rubber bands (which come in very handy to secure extension cords, curtains and blinds), safety gates and a first-aid kit filled with bandages and antiseptic creams.

Lastly, it is important to remember that kids are very fast, and unfortunately it only takes a second for your child to get into a dangerous situation. Ultimately, there are no gadgets that can take the place of keeping your eyes and ears constantly open when it comes to keeping young children safe in the home. Vigilance is the key.
