A Man's Touch

Designing the Nursery with the Dad-to-be

By Teri Brown

Pages:  1  2  3

If these behaviors are limited because Mom is on bed rest or has some other physical restriction, it can cause a great deal of concern. This is the time for Dad to step in and help finish up the nursery and otherwise prepare the house. Having everything spit spot and ready can go far in easing a mom's anxiety.

Precautions for the Mom-to-be
Dad's involvement is also very helpful when it comes to things Mom shouldn't be doing such as climbing on ladders or painting.

"There are several things moms should be aware of during pregnancy, especially during the later months," Dr. Sindoni says. "Pregnant women should void exposure to oil or urethane-based paints or any other paint that smells bad. Pregnant women should also avoid removing paint in older buildings since it may have lead contamination that may be problematic for both Baby and Mom."

This is where Dad comes in. By doing these jobs for his wife, he is protecting both Mom and Baby as well as giving his wife the support she needs during her pregnancy.

A father's involvement with the nursery is a good start on being involved with every aspect of labor, childhood and beyond.

The Basics

When interior decorator Judith Wilson designs a nursery, she keeps in mind the basic items that every nursery needs.

  • Bassinet – For the first three months on wheels so it can be taken into the master bedroom at night.
  • Crib – Be sure that if you purchase a used crib, that it is the current safety model.
  • Changing table with shelves for diapers and baby powder, etc.
  • Bedding for crib with bumper guards
  • Diaper pail
  • Trashcan
  • Rocking chair with foot stool
  • Dresser drawers (unless they're built in to the closet)
  • Nightlight
  • If the room is large enough, a bed for Mom and Baby to rest and/or nurse
