  • Steffy agrees that dressing children appropriately is of greatest importance. "If you have a toddler and they are walking, make sure they have protective covering on their feet when they go out if it's wet," she says. "Children get very cold fast and keeping them dry is one of the keys to promoting health. If they're playing outside in the snow, make sure they have several changes of clothes so they can stay dry and warm."

    Staying Safe
Dr. Krata reminds new moms that during the winter, it's easy to forget about sun exposure. "If the day's forecast calls for a lot of direct or strong sunlight – particularly at high altitudes or places where blankets of snow can reflect the sun's rays – it's important to use sunscreen," he says.

And a final point of comfort for little ones, adds Dr. Krata, if possible, is to keep portable car seats inside the home to keep them warm before taking your child out for a drive.

"Remember that colds are caused by germs and not drafts or bringing Baby outside," Steffy says. "Fresh air is good for all and so is a change of pace. Bring children out for a walk when the weather is clear; just dress them appropriately. Just avoid places and gatherings that have sick children or adults in attendance."
