Advice Avalanche
Handling Unsolicited Opinions About Parenting
By Melinda Copp
(Spark Press, 2006). "And understand the difference between asking for advice and asking for support."
On bad days, call a family member or friend and ask for permission to vent. When the stress of parenting is getting to you, you really need someone to hear out your frustrations and to offer a sympathetic ear. When you're in problem solving mode, ask for advice on your parenting challenges. You'll be more likely to take the advice seriously without getting annoyed or defensive. And try to maintain a positive attitude. "Take everything with a grain of salt and keep a sense of humor," Tiemann says.
Whether you ask for it or not, you'll get advice on all aspects of childcare and parenting. This is never easy for any new mom to handle. Keep in mind that these people only want to help. And understand that parenting is a hands-on skill that everyone can learn, and you'll feel confident in your abilities in no time.
