Managing Holiday Madness
Sanity Strategies for Parents
By Mark Stackpole
Maintaining Schedules
Many families work hard on establishing a schedule for young children; naptimes, meal times, bath times and bedtimes are often carefully coordinated to provide parents and kids with a sense of structure and normalcy. When the holidays come around, there can be many disturbances to this schedule, which may increase the potential for crankiness in kids from 1 to 92. Holmes and her family have maintained a fluid daily schedule for just such situations. "We don't really want her on too tight of a schedule with meals and naps because it makes it harder to make adjustments," she says. "We intentionally try to do things off-schedule on the weekends to keep her flexible. The long days and longer nights of the holidays are actually something we can adjust to well enough. In short, daily holiday chaos is an easy battle for us."
Though the battle may be a lot harder for families that do keep more rigid schedules, trying to adhere strictly to them might be more trouble and stressful than it is worth.
