Baby's First Halloween
11 Inexpensive Costumes
for Frugal Moms
for Frugal Moms
By Shannon McKelden
4. Ladybug
Start with a "tunic" made by sewing two ovals of red felt together, leaving a neck hole. This can be worn over a black or red sleeper and tied shut with matching ribbons at the sides. (As an alternative, use a red sleeper or drawstring nightgown.) Glue on a few large black felt dots (or use non-toxic fabric paint). Attach two chenille stems to a black velvet headband (or wrap any headband in black ribbon) for antennae. 5. Black Cat
Begin with a black sleeper. (Don't forget you can dye a lighter color black!) Use a black headband or cap and attach black cat ears made of felt or construction paper. Black eyeliner can be used to draw on whiskers and a triangle on the tip of Baby's nose for the kitty nose.
6. Pumpkin 7. Bald-headed Clown
Begin with a sleeper of any color. Add a white ruffle of fabric around the neckline and around each ankle. Use a pink or flesh-colored hat to simulate a bald head (plus it keeps Baby's head warm!) or purchase a "bald wig." Add a little non-toxic rouge to Baby's cheeks and nose. 8. Baby Frog
Start with a solid green sleeper or sweat suit. Cover a headband with green felt or wrap it in green ribbon. Make the base for the frog's eyes by cutting out four ovals of green felt and gluing them together, sandwiching cardboard in between to make them stiff. Attach each "sandwich" to the headband where eyes would be. Glue one large wiggle eye (available at craft stores) on each for fun froggy eyes. Want to see more?
