Is Circumcision Necessary?
Understanding Both Sides
of the Debate
of the Debate
By Jacqueline Bodnar
Many parents are not well informed about the pros and cons of the procedure, and even more don't have a good understanding of what is involved in having it done.
Circumcised fathers are a big factor in why the cycle continues. Many feel that their sons need to look like they do. But Dr. Goldman points out that those same fathers wouldn't want their sons to look like them if they were missing an arm, a toe or some other body part. "As with any elective surgery, discuss the procedure carefully with your physician," Dr. Olson says. "My personal recommendation is that this procedure is best done by the pediatrician, rather than the delivering doctor, for we are the ones who will be dealing with the follow-up concerns of the parent."
