Is Circumcision Necessary?

Understanding Both Sides
of the Debate

Not a Necessity
"Circumcision is not recommended by any national medical organization in the world," says Dr. Ronald Goldman, executive director of the Circumcision Resource Center and author of the book Circumcision, the Hidden Trauma: How an American Cultural Practice Affects Infants and Ultimately Us All (Vanguard Publications, 1997). "They generally state that the evidence is insufficient to justify doing it."

The AAP position on circumcision is that, while scientific studies show some medical benefits, they don't feel the benefits are sufficient for them to recommend that all infant boys have it done. They also state that almost all uncircumcised boys can be taught proper hygiene to lower their chances of having problems.

The Reasons
"The United States is the only country in the world that circumcises most of its male infants for nonreligious reasons," Dr. Goldman says. "It continues because of deeply embedded American cultural beliefs, fears and attitudes. The reasons are complex ad have much more to do with psychology than medicine."
