Further, Dr. Olson points out that HIV acquisition is three times greater in the uncircumcised compared to the circumcised male, although opponents of the procedure might state that behavioral factors play a much greater role.

Complication and Pain Issues
"There is a risk of minor complications, bleeding and infection," Dr. Olson says. "My experience as someone who has done over 3,000 circumcisions is that, while bleeding can be a problem and infection is exceedingly rare, both can be managed easily."

Pain is one of the most discussed issues when it comes to circumcision. The AAP recommends that the procedure not be performed without an appropriate analgesic. Some doctors use a topical source while others prefer an oral one or a combination of the two.

"Most babies that I circumcise have more crying with a diaper change than during the procedure," Dr. Olson says.

No!
When Denease Hager of Las Vegas, Nev., found out she was going to have a baby boy, she immediately dreaded having to make the circumcision decision. Although she was very much against the procedure, she let her husband make the decision. His mind was set on having it done so his son would look like him. The couple both witnessed the circumcision that took place whn their baby was a week old. Afterwards, her husband joined her in being against the procedure.

"I figured it was a brutal thing for an infant to go through, but I never imagined just how disturbing it would be," Hager says. "My husband almost fainted while it was being done. He was amazed at just how hard it was to watch. Our son was visibly in a great deal of pain, and it was too late to do anything about it. We now both feel it's an unnecessary procedure."
