New Mom "Fat Traps"
How to Avoid Them
and Lose Weight
and Lose Weight
By Melinda Copp
"Women are most teachable when they are pregnant because they want to be healthy for their baby," says Elizabeth Somer, a registered dietitian and author of Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy (Owl Books, 2002) and 10 Habits That Mess up a Woman's Diet (McGraw-Hill, 2005). So start practicing healthy eating habits while you're still pregnant and they will likely continue after your baby is born.
"Always take snacks with you when you leave," Somer says. Packing snacks like string cheese, yogurt and
baby carrots will prevent you from driving through a fast food restaurant or picking up a candy bar when you get hungry. This will also reinforce this habit for your children.
Another good way to make sure you have healthy meals on hand is to make enough at one time to last you through the week. "On Sundays, make a big pot of something you can graze off of all week," Somer says. This way you only have to make tim once a week to cook, and you can have homemade stew or chili for several days. Do the same with cutting fruit and vegetables so you'll have enough to snack on through the week.
