Your Baby's First Hours

What About Mom?
With vaginal deliveries, once your baby and the afterbirth are delivered, your work is essentially done. If you had an episiotomy or any tearing, your doctor will be stitching you up. You will be cleaned up and finally have the opportunity to meet your little one.

During your pregnancy or labor and delivery, you may hear about postpartum hemorrhaging. This is bleeding caused by the uterus being overextended and can happen when you're carrying twins or multiples or if you have excess water or a long labor. However, postpartum hemorrhages are pretty uncommon.

"This is rare," says Dr. Lawrence Alvarez, an OB/GYN at the Cleveland Clinic. "We don't give postpartum hemorrhage a second thought except for being ready."

If you had a C-section delivery, you will need more attention after delivery to close the incision and time to recover from the anesthesia, but you can still meet your baby in the first few hours of his or her arrival.

Delivering your baby will be one of the most challenging experiences of your life. And you may feel like what's happening is completely out of your control, especially after Baby is born. But understanding the procedures and knowing what to ask your doctor will help ease your mind and allow you to focus on what's most important – meeting your new baby.
