Homecoming for Twins
Making New Family Connections
By Laura Cone
- Consider the best sleeping arrangements and whether your twins will sleep together or apart. Some moms use the portable cribs intended for travel in their bedroom for the first month.
- Stock up on clean blankets, diapers, wash clothes, wipes, pacifiers and bottles.
- Make arrangements so you can get at least five consecutive hours of sleep without interruption. Let someone else handle one major feeding during the night.
- Whether or not you breastfeed, plan to encourage your twins to be on the same feeding and sleeping schedule by waking up the second one after feeding the first one who awakens. Don't let them both sleep and eat on demand.
- Make sure you are completely prepared at least six months in advance because of the risk of premature labor.
- Consider joining a twins support group before the babies are born.
- Begin asking friends and family if they can help. Don't be timid about asking people to commit to babysitting, meal preparation or cleaning. Keep a schedule.
- Spend time alone with both twins and the twins' older siblings.
- In advance, think of ways to identify the twins and let family and friends know about your plan, such as color codes, so they can address each twin by name.
- Make an inventory of what you have and what you need in terms of car seats, cribs, clothes and other items.
