Homecoming for Twins
Making New Family Connections
By Laura Cone
She let friends and family members help, too. "When the second one came home that feeling of overwhelming came upon my husband and I, like, oh my gosh, we have two babies, what do we do?" says Slaughter, who breastfed for 13 months. "You had to sort of set up a routine. We were lucky we had a lot of friends and families who brought meals to us. We were so busy just changing and feeding, it was difficult to think about preparing a meal. That was helpful."
Slaughter says they look back now and feel grateful for the help they had to make it a smooth transition from hospital to home. "We were both aware it would be a lot of work, but we did not have any idea how much work," she says. "Until you have to live through it ... how busy it is ... I don't think you have a clue.
Slaughter recommends finding a twins or multiples support group. She joined a group before her babies were born so she could ask questions and get advice from people who have gone through it. "There are people in the group who have been on bed rest or have had their babies early, who have breastfed," she says. "I definitely recommend finding a group."
Finally, be prepared for the outpouring of gifts, visits and interest in your twins' homecoming. When friends and family want to buy you something, suggest gift certificates for cleaning services, a personal concierge service or make-and-take meals, which can also be ordered and delivered. Don't begrudge kindness, as having twins is a doubled blessed event, which requires expediential, not just twice, the help.
