Practical Purchases
Having twins puts you more at risk for being on bed rest and going into premature labor, so it's wise to take care of all the practical purchases and interior design changes during your first trimester.

"My big thing was to already have bought the double stroller where your car seats click into it," says Schmitt, who began taking her twins with her for walks after two weeks.

She did not want to know the gender of her twins, so Schmitt picked a neutral theme of Noah's Ark for the nursery. She recycled her daughter's older crib and bought a second matching one. "We did the two cribs in one room, the dresser with changing table, the border," she says. "Everything was painted, ready to go."

Getting to Know Two
Nancy Segal, a professor of developmental psychology and the director of the Twin Studies Center at California State University, Fullerton, says it's important for family members and friends to address the twins by their correct names.

Although it may be difficult, parents of twins have come up with tricks, such as painting one twin's toenail, which Schmitt tried even though her twins are fraternal. Schmitt says she also left her twins' hospital bracelets on for the first two weeks.
