OK, the big moment is here. What's next? First, rid yourself of any preconceived notions, Vickmark says. "There's no need to try to fit children into a certain parameter with them always looking into the camera and always sitting up straight," he says. "Most of the time, the best photography comes from the unexpected."

The session should be a lot like playtime. "Smiles need to be enticed out of a child with play and jokes and pranks, not asked for on demand," Sendry says. "But key to anything working is just going with the flow and quickly changing direction when we see something is not working. Constant direction change is the only way to keep at it."

What if things aren't going so well? Almost any session can be salvaged, says Sendry. "We can bring a child back from almost any tantrum or other issue if the parents just relax and go with the flow," she says. After all, babies can go from sobbing to giggles in minutes. Sendry uses tactics such as a snack, a break or a change of direction to try to get the session back on track.

Just have fun, says Vickmark. Photography sessions don't have to be stuffy, stressful or boring. "All you have to do is enjoy the time with your child and choose a photographer who can capture this special time together," he says.
