Using a professional children's photographer offers a ton of flexibility – for example, whether or not you want your child's picture taken indoors or out. These photographers often spend a great deal of time working with their clients.

However, the high-volume studios can also offer surprising flexibility, as trends in children's photography have changed dramatically. "We are seeing a lot of nice, clean white or solid backgrounds and a lot of close-ups," says Melissa Burt, portrait expert with Sears Portrait Studio, which has more than 900 studios in 200 cities across the United States. "Photography is not really going to the basic formal pose anymore – it's more of a moment that you are capturing."

Large studios aren't typically as intimate as solo photographers, but you won't necessarily sacrifice quality, and they offer quick convenience and much lower prices.

To narrow it down, think about the style of photography you prefer, says Vickmark. Do you like more of a "documentary" or "lifestyle" type portrait – often a home, with natural light – or would you prefer an image taken in a studio with backdrops and special lighting? "It is near impossible to change the way a photographer works, so you must find the photographer who fits what you are looking for," Vickmark says.
