Baby Gadgets – Are They for You?
Two Moms Share Their Views

Lisa McLean of Sydney, Australia says baby gadgets are not for her or her family. "To me, they just seem like a cop out," she says. "Instead of handling the baby 24 hours a day, these gadgets can often result in a baby who is moved from one place to another without being handled at all! I want my babies to be cuddled, bounced and carried by us – his parents and family – rather than restrained by items like these."
Although McLean doesn't have multi-colored "baby holders" filtered through her house, she does own a few items she considers useful for daily life: a stroller, a backpack carrier and a high chair.
"I use the backpack almost every day to carry my 9-month-old, Quinn, while holding the hand of my 3-year-old son, Culver," she says. "If we are going out for the whole day I will use the [stroller] for the baby, however on short trips – shopping and the like – the backpack is preferable. It leaves my hands free, which is a major advantage. It also gives Quinn a great view of the world and ensures he is involved in everything that I'm doing. I carried Culver on my back until he was 14 months old. When they were both very tiny I wore them in a sling."
When asked what prompted her to steer clear of baby gadgets, McLean says, "Even if my budget stretched to afford these items I wouldn't buy them. So money was a small issue. Looking back it probably wasn't a decision we made; it just didn'
