Baby Gadgets – Are They for You?
Two Moms Share Their Views

n I am in the shower."
When Ackles is out and about, she has many helpers. "The Snap-and-Go stroller that the car seat fits on allows quick in and out of the car without waking him, and it is small for the mall and crowded areas," she says. "The jogging stroller is easy to push for walking and Rollerblading." Not only is the baby carrier great for while she's cooking dinner or for when she's cleaning, "it is also great at parties so he can see everyone and be close to me. [It also] fits in my diaper bag so he can be transferred to that from the car seat if the stroller isn't appropriate for the place I am going. I use the play yard when I travel for the night and in the yard with the canopy."
Ackles bought gadgets after seeing her sisters and friends use them with ease. She says she needed a place for her son to be happy while she was doing other things. What else influenced her to purchase these items? "Seeing the items in Babies R Us," she says.
Although most of her friends use gadgets, too, Ackles notes, "I have one friend that doesn't use gadgets and her baby plays happier by herself and with less activity around her. She seems to be better at entertaining herself rather than continuously being entertained by the gadgets."
But Ackles feels she would have a difficult time without all of her aides. "I am dependent on them," she admits. "I would have a hard time getting things done around the house. I have traveled for a week without most of them and felt like my baby was either in my arms or on the floor. I think he is happier to be doing things and in things (swings, bouncers, saucers) because that is what he is used to. He loves the movement from all of the toys. He is excited to be in the saucer and the jump-up because it makes him more mobile on his own. He laughs an screeches with the gym.
"I think that the gadgets have been a double-edged sword. He loves being in them but seems to be as dependent on them as I am. He likes to have lights and songs and movement all day. I couldn't live without most of the gadgets."
