Blankets Keep Baby Snug as a Bug

Purchasing the Right Blankets for Your Newborn

There are a wide variety of blankets specifically made for swaddling. Kiddopotamus' SwaddleMe was created in 2001 and holds a little one's arms comfortably against their chest to recreate the safety and security of their previous environment in utero. This iParenting Media Award winner works "by preventing the startle reflex, which often awakens babies repeatedly throughout the course of the night, making Baby sleep longer and better when swaddled securely," says Kristen Peterson, vice president of Kiddopotamus & Co. in Leawood, Kan.

HALO Innovations SleepSack Swaddle, also an iParenting Media Award winner, is a new twist on its previous SleepSack wearable blanket. Containing an adjustable, removable swaddle feature, it allows parents to position their baby three different ways: swaddle them gentle with their arms tucked in, allow their arms to be free or just remove the swaddle feature and use the wearable blanket alone.

Receiving blankets provide Mom and Dad an easy way to hold their tiny newborn baby, while others are meant to provide Baby with ways to ease the transition into rest and provide comfort and protection. Baby Polar Gear's Honu Wrap is perfect for babies who will be spending a lot of time outdoors. Designed without bulky zippers or buttons, the Honu Wrap is made from polar fleece material that is lightweight yet acts as a shield for unpredictable weather, wrapping your baby up snugly.
