Sleep, Baby, Sleep

When Pre-adoption Experiences Make Slumber Difficult

Carbery-Scott says children go through different stages at different ages. "My 7- and 10-year-old children are known to bring their sleeping bags and pillows into my room and sleep on the floor beside our bed (they're too big to fit in the bed with us!)," she says. "There are also times when they stay in their beds and I rub their backs until they fall asleep. This is just a once-in-a-while thing ... but sometimes our kids need it."

Scary Beginnings
"My son arrived at 5 days [old] and was up every four hours as expected, then slept through the night for three years, then had night terrors and had to be comforted and held for hours," says Carbery-Scott. "He still sleeps in my room at least once a week even at the age of 10." Carbery-Scott says don't expect your child to fall asleep and wake up according to your schedule. "They are all different," she adds.

There are the toddlers who may not have been so lucky in their little lives to have had someone hold them nightly with love and warmth. These children will demand the nightly routine of reading, singing lullabies and any other sensory warmth before bedtime.

"My daughter had some drug issues at birth and could not sleep unless I walked around for hours rocking her and then [she] slept in a bassinette beside my bed for one year," says Carbery-Scott. "She woke up screaming if she did not feel my hand on her stomach. She turned into a 'normal' sleeper, but she, too, spends at least one night a week in my room."
