Some Not Too Baby-friendly Places

While they seem innocuous, the music levels at outdoor concerts can be quite loud for young ears. Because a baby can't communicate what's wrong, fussiness due to the noise and activity might be misinterpreted for hunger or the need for a nap.

"I wouldn't take my baby or toddler to a wedding, unless the couple has specifically said that children are welcome," says Karen Bush of Great Falls, Va. "The couple usually wants the attention, and babies or toddlers have a way of stealing the show."

Not wanting to detract from the event or subject a young child to hours of uncomfortable clothes, unusual foods and unknown strangers, similar thinking is often applied to funerals, confirmations or bar mitzvahs. "Children aren't always able to process the extreme grief at funerals, and often attendees need time to focus on their grief instead of worrying about a small child," Bush says.

Beautiful Baby
Anyone who's tried knows how tough it is to watch your children when your head is in a shampoo bowl or your hand is being held by a manicurist. "It is disappointing to finally be able to squeeze in time to pamper myself and there's a person in the next chair whose child is running around or crying the whole time," says Molly Sanefski, the mother of twins from Crystal Lake, Ill.

Fearing they'll be subjected to harsh chemical odors or injury, Sanefski uses the time to recharge her batteries while giving her children the chance to build their independence. "They can play with a babysitter while I treat myself to a needed break," says Sanefski.
