Follow the suggested weight and appropriate use, Fleming says. "Some of them say not to use for infants younger than a certain age," she says.

Fleming, a mother of three, says some consumers might get so comfortable with their baby swings they forget babies cannot be left alone even for a second. "I know, as a mom, I could use it to place the baby in there and run to the bathroom," Fleming says. "Never stray too far from a baby when the product is in use."

Checking the Recall Lists
When it comes to using hand-me-down baby swings, Fleming says to check the CPSC Web site to make sure the item is not on a recall list. "With hand-me-down items, you want to be careful of those," she says. "We have had a few recall problems with children sliding down feet first and getting caught by the tray by their head and neck area."

Some baby swings that have been voluntarily recalled in the past include Graco's Travel Lite swings. They were recalled in July 2004 because the swing's carrying handle can fail to stay in place properly and drop or be pushed down, hitting a child in the head. Additionally, the three-point seatbelt can fail to prevent a child from leaning forward or to either side, posing a risk that the child could fall forward and strike his head on the floor or the swing's frame.

Also, in November 2002, Baby Trend Inc. voluntarily recalled its Trend Swing because the swing's support arm can loosen or detach, presenting a fall hazard to infants. Other recalls include Fisher Price's voluntary recall for in-home repair of Smart Response Swings in April 2002 and Little Tikes Company's 2-in-1 Snug 'n Secure swings in October 2001.
