Playpen Paradise

Selecting the Right Play Yard for Baby

By Laura Cone

Pages:  1  2  3  4

While it may be tempting to place your child in the playpen while you work or take a nap, don't leave your baby alone in a playpen. Babies need constant attention. If you don't give them attention by playing with them and feeding them, their playpen, no matter how colorful and entertaining, may feel to them like a place of solitary confinement.

Playpen Safety Tips
  • Do not leave your child in a mesh playpen with the drop side in the down position, as the baby could suffocate between the pad and loose mesh.
  • Do not give your child toys, pillows, books or objects they could use to elevate themselves to fall or climb out of the play pen.
  • The slats on wooden playpens should be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart.
  • Do not leave your child unattended in a playpen.
  • Feed your child on your lap or in a highchair instead of letting him feed himself in a playpen, as he may choke on food.
  • Do not tie anything across the top of the playpen or allow dangling strings or items to enter that may strangle your baby.
  • Do not give your baby radios or electronic devices in his playpen to avoid electrocution.
  • Check for holes and tears in the mattress and cushions. You do not want your baby to eat mattress material.
  • Always make sure the playpen is fully erected and set up before placing your baby in it.
  • Check the product safety lists and make sure your baby's playpen meets the new safety standard that requires the top rails to automatically lock into place.
