Bringing Taste Back to the Highchair
Annabel Karmel on Homemade Baby Food
By Laura Cone
Timesaving Tricks
With so many parents working, Karmel says some parents worry they don't have time to make their own baby food. "I know a lot of people say I don't have time and I'm a working mother and all of this," she says. "Really it does not take long. My idea is you make more than you need and you freeze it in ice cube trays. Basically you just need to cook once a week for your baby and you can make fabulous things." Baby food may last in the freezer for three months. Heat it up in a pan to kill off bacteria when re-heating from frozen. Make sure to let the food cool and stir to get rid of any hot spots.
Controlling Taste and Texture
One of the main advantages of preparing homemade baby food is it puts you in control of what your baby will eat. "You know what you have put into your food when you make it," says Karmel. "It's good quality food. You won't get that from jars."
Karmel says it's easy to make baby food purees by using a blender or food processor. For some foods, such as potatoes and peas, it's best to use a handheld food mill so the texture does not become sticky, which is a texture most babies don't like.
Apples are easy for babies to digest, making an apple puree an ideal baby food, she says. She suggests blending sweet potato and apple with chicken fora baby's first chicken puree.
