Car Seat Crying
When the Buzz of the Engine Doesn't Lull Your Baby to Sleep

Walker suggests giving your baby or toddler soft toys in the car that are only for use in the car when they are not crying. Don't gather up the toys and take them into the restaurant or into the home because the toys will lose their allure, she says. Rotate the toys whenever you decide they need to be changed out to keep your child interested.
"Those toys are only for use in the car when the child is sitting appropriately," Walker says. "Your child is anxious to get in the car to play with those toys because they don't get to do it unless they are sitting nicely at their seats."
Walker also suggests playing music to relax your baby while driving. Of course, the music should not be so relaxing it causes you to fall asleep.
Stockburger says she gives her children soft hand toys. She let her children hold their own bottle after they were 9 months old. "You have to be careful," Stockburger says. "You don't want to do a lot of things attached to the seat. In a car crash it can become a projectile."
Finally, don't expect your infant to handle long road trips without some discomfort. Even if you manage to distract them with music, toys and mesmerizing pictures, they will still need to be fed and changed. Don't let another adult caregiver take the baby out ofhis car seat to be changed or fed. Wait until you get to a rest stop or restaurant, and make the stops regular and frequent.
