From Roughing It to Four-star
What Are the Costs of Family Vacations?
By Deborah Ng
No overview of family vacations would be complete without at least a mention of America's favorite family-friendly resort, Disneyworld. Disneyland and Disneyworld combine beloved characters with adult amenities to provide a vacation experience that works for everyone. Kids can play in the pool or go on rides, while parents can get a massage or eat in a five-star restaurant. Packages at Disneyland for a family of four can range from $200 per night to over $2,000 per night.
Ann MacDonald of Ocean County, Calif., has traveled with her family to Hawaii on more than one occasion. Each visit set the MacDonalds back about $5,000, but they felt it was well worth it. In addition to taking in the scenery, visiting the Maui Ocean Center and riding a glass bottom boat, they splurged on a suite.
"We did stay in a four-star resort with a suite," says MacDonald. "We find that suites make hotel travel much better for a family. We can put Kaylie to bed and still be able to talk, read, watch a movie or sit on the balcony with a bottle of wine. A suite is a little more economical (usually) than adjoining rooms, and most hotels won't promise you adjoining rooms."
