The Best Stroller for Baby
Buying a Stroller that Fits the Bill
By Sue Marquette Poremba
Another consideration when purchasing a stroller is the most important of all: the passenger. The parents want to buy a stroller that fits best into their lifestyle; after all, they are the ones who will be operating it. However, a stroller needs to be purchased with the comfort of the baby in mind.
Lisa Druxman, the founder of Stroller Strides, a fitness program for new moms, says strollers should have a padded harness, a canopy that fully covers the baby, and, particularly for parents who plan to use the stroller while working out, good shock absorbers. Shalena Smith says she always makes sure the stroller's seat has three reclining positions so the baby can sleep lying down.
Just as important as the baby's comfort is the baby's age. Some strollers, like umbrella strollers, aren't good for infants. Because of a stroller's expense, most parents plan to buy one stroller that is meant to last from newborn to preschool.
Because there are so many choices, buying a stroller can be a stressful experience, especially for a relative or family friend who last purchased a stroller 25 years ago when the choices were between an umbrella stroller and a baby carriage. Fair advises parents to talk to people in shopping malls and in parks who are pushing strollers. Ask them what they like and dislike about their stroller. "Always do your research," says Fair. "Take your time on making a decision. Better to be sure than to be returning and exchanging a stroller or having it wear down in just a year."
